cleaning up – it’s part of cooking.

Whether you like it or not, you need to clean up after you cook. Set aside 5 or 10 minutes after you eat, before you go to bed, to do the dishes and put everything away. When you go to cook the next day you should be starting with a clean working space, with a small amount of leftover food in the fridge, and an organized pantry. Here’s what you need to get started.

  • Dish Soap. Get whatever you like, you will be using about 1 tsp a day.
  • Bleach. I keep a small bottle under the sink. The most under rated part of your cleaning arsenal.
  • Green and yellow sponges. They are classic and cheap. We will maintain them as best we can and they will last us a while.
  • Small buckets or pails. You will need a few of these, they can be anything that holds about half a gallon of water comfortably. I like to use old stainless steel stuff that is lying around, or get yourself a few pro red and green pails to keep it organized.
  • Rags. I have some old kitchen rags that I rotate through and try to keep clean. I also have a stack of old shirts that have holes in them, for any crazy messes or large volume liquid cleanup. Spills happen, and even basic cleanup requires cloth rags. The more often you wash them the better.
