washing dishes – follow a system

Washing dishes can suck, but it doesn’t have to. Here are some tricks:

  • Maintain a pail of soapy water with a splash of bleach to gather and soak any small utensils or anything potentially greasy. You’ll draw from this pail to wash your dishes, and it will then be the last thing you clean every day. Try and find something that works for you and then commit to using that every day.
  • Try to use your water more than once! Whenever I turn on the faucet I am basically just rinsing bleachy soapy water off of something that is washed into something that is not. That cycle of bleachy soapy water being used a few times saves water and time, and is the mark of an efficient dish washing system.
  • Take pride in a clean kitchen and learn to enjoy the tasks. The more you clean, the better you will get at it. It’s a good time to think, or listen to music. Cleaning is a part of cooking, embrace it.
